Having the Dr. before my name was one of my original reasons for doing this PhD. I'm smart, school was never that hard for me, so I figured I should finish it out all the way through a doctorate. It was partially just to say, "Yeah I have a PhD." I know that's stupid to a lot of people, and it seems pretty stupid to me now. Haha

Teaching was never my plan. I've been involved with teaching a little bit. I couldn't do it as a career. Especially with the publication push and politics that you find in universities.

Getting the PhD opens up a couple job options for me. Consulting independently and consulting with a firm are among those options. My original plan coming out of undergrad was to get the PhD then start my consulting business. But somewhere along the way I've been de-railed from that plan. And now I'm just not sure if my heart is in it.

I'll keep everyone updated. My decision has to be made by April 15th. Just one more month!

If you get the PhD, what are you going to do with it? Teach? Keep doing the research, publication, grant-getting that you don't seem to like? It might sound nice to be a Dr and all, but it doesn't seem like you want it for anything other than the title. (That's what it seems like to me.. I could be totally wrong.) It seems silly to commit to a program that will be time and work intensive when you aren't really passionate about it and don't have clear reasons for doing it.

Hi Reuben,

To me it doesn't sound like you are too passionate about getting a PhD. However, perhaps it might enable you to do other jobs you'd like that you are unable to do now.

The main question that comes to mind for me is: What excites you? What makes you come alive? How can you answer those questions with your work?

If none of those answers are your Experimental Psychology PhD program, then why do it?

Curious to hear what you decide and how you are thinking....
